Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano’s board of trustees unanimously approved a $33.4 million expansion and renovation plan to improve and advance several of the services that the hospital currently offers the community.

“With this strategic expansion plan, Texas Health Plano is making a significant effort to invest in the health of our community by enhancing the quality of care that we are able to offer our patients,” said Mike Evans, president of Texas Health Plano. “The technology we are adding in the new operating rooms and electrophysiology lab will increase our ability to perform more complex procedures, and the renovations and added amenities will help to make patients and their families more comfortable while they are here.”

The capital project will include adding five operating rooms, bringing Texas Health Plano’s total to 19, as well as a redesigned central sterile area to increase efficiency and workflow for care team members. The new operating rooms were designed with input from surgeons and anesthesiologists from all specialty and sub-specialty areas, perioperative nurses, infection control, environmental services and IT to include advanced technology and improve the ease of use for all departments.

“I am proud to have been involved in this very collaborative process of designing the new operating rooms,” said Gary White, a surgeon on the medical staff at Texas Health Plano and physician project leader for the operating room expansion. “We have consulted with everyone that is involved with operating procedures and taken their needs into consideration, which has resulted in a design that is ergonomic, efficient and technologically advanced.”

Construction of the operating rooms will begin in the first quarter of 2014, and is expected to be completed by the second quarter of 2015.

In addition to the new operating rooms, construction is underway to add a third heart and vascular procedure room.  This new lab will be dedicated to electrophysiology procedures and will be located in Tower B, on the second floor of the hospital within the Heart and Vascular Center.

The EP lab has been designed to offer a comprehensive suite of services for heart rhythm disorders that focus on elevating the patient and family experience. This dedicated EP lab will offer advanced heart mapping technology while also providing low-dose fluoroscopy to minimize radiation to the patient and healthcare providers. Construction began on the EP lab in August 2013, and is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2014.

“The expansion of the EP lab is further proof the dedication Texas Health Plano has to providing high quality cardiac care to our community,” said Charles Lampe, a cardiologist on the medical staff and medical director of the EP lab at Texas Health Plano. “With this new addition, we will be able to continue the high level of care that we currently provide, but now in a larger, more comfortable space designed to meet all the needs of the patient and caregivers.”

Other expansion projects include a new coffee bar in the main lobby, which was named Healing Grounds Café by employees. The care should open in early April.  Renovations and updates to the labor and delivery and cardiac telemetry floor are also underway.

The new construction projects began at the hospital in the third quarter of 2013, and are expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2015.
