Following years of planning, Intelligent Epitaxy Technology (IntelliEPI) has finally broke ground on its new headquarters in Allen.
The high-tech manufacturer of semi-conductor wafers found in cellphones, cars, optical network and infrared detection was established in 1999 in Richardson, with another base in Taiwan. In 2014, the company purchased 7.5 acres near Ridgemont Drive and Greenville Avenue in Allen.
“Now we have a home where we can consolidate and work more efficiently,” said Andrew Kang, chairman of the IntelliEPI board of directors, during a groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday.
Mayor Stephen Terrell and Dan Bowman, CEO of the Allen Economic Development Corp. (AEDC), were there to celebrate.
“This is our most southern end of Allen, Texas -- you’re actually the beginning of it as we come through going to the north,” Terrell said. “I think you’ll be a great fit for the whole city of Allen and the whole community itself.”
According to Bowman, talks between the city and IntelliEPI to relocate to Allen began three years ago. Acquiring a site and designing a 68,000-square-foot facility, Bowman said, doesn’t happen overnight; the AEDC and city worked with the tech supplier to identify its new location.
“It takes a lot more time than you’d expect. I know everybody here on this team was diligent,” he said. “There are not a lot of sites in the city of Allen that could accommodate a facility of this type. This is really the perfect spot.”
Nearby Ridgemont Drive, an important connector between U.S. Highway 75 and State Highway 5, makes IntelliEPI’s new location a primo spot, Bowman noted. Furthermore, he added, the city took it upon itself to construct more of Ridgemont beyond its original end point to make it possible for IntelliEPI to move to its preferred location, a responsibility that normally falls to the site developer or the arriving company.
Kang said the groundbreaking ceremony happened to coincide with the Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival, which is China’s holiday equivalent of Thanksgiving in the U.S.
“We’re happy that we find our new home here,” he said.
