The city of Allen is preparing to hire architects and engineers to design Allen’s newest recreation center.

Allen City Council approved the Exchange Parkway Feasibility Study during the Nov. 12 meeting. This 72-page document provides conceptual designs, suggested amenities and estimated project cost for the 149,000-square-foot facility, to be located on Exchange Parkway south of Ridgeview Drive.

Citizens provided feedback in three public meetings, five workshops and an online survey over the course of 12 months. These responses helped prioritize key features of the future facility, including:

Two gymnasiums with separate areas for recreation and competition

Indoor play spaces to engage younger users

An indoor walk/jog track with both flat and inclined/stair options

Group fitness areas for aerobics, dance and spin classes

Weights and cardio areas for independent fitness

Flexible classrooms and party rooms

Child watch area

Catering kitchen

Outdoor fitness deck

Trails radiating from the building will provide connections to nearby neighborhoods and the existing Allen trail system. As consultants explained in the feasibility study, “the goal is for the facility to initially offer a high level of indoor-outdoor experience that can be augmented over time with additional amenities and improvements...[creating] an authentic place that is uniquely rooted to the project site.”

In addition to the Phase 1 building and site conceptual plan, several ideas on how the building and site development may be expanded in the future are included in the feasibility study.

A mayor-appointed steering committee helped guide overall project expectations and budget discussions. The proposed $54 million facility is envisioned to be completed and opened in Spring 2023.
