East hangs on for emotional win over Allen

Allen senior C.J. Winzer, pictured, had a shot waved off by the officials that would have given the Eagles a win over Plano East Friday night.

PLANO — Allen senior C.J. Winzer hit what appeared to be a game-winning layup as time expired that would have given the Eagles a one-point win over Plano East Friday night, but upon further review, the officials gathered and decided the ball left his hand after the final buzzer sounded.

That ruling gave the Panthers (7-2 in District 10-5A) a 49-48 win and sole possession of second place in the district standings.

Allen (6-3) drops to third place with one game (7:30 p.m. Tuesday versus Plano West) remaining in the regular season.

East will host McKinney at the same time and date.

The game was tied, 44-44, heading into the fourth quarter, and the Eagles jumped out to a 48-44 lead on two big dunks by senior Jamuni McNeace.

But East hung tough, and senior Zach Smith hit a pair of free throws with 20.2 seconds to play that proved decisive in the final outcome.

Allen junior Nick Rutherford led all scorers with 17 points, 12 of which came in the first half.
