Ask the Vet ...
Is it safe to anesthetize older pets?
“There are several “Ifs” you need to consider in order to answer this
question. IF your pet is in good or at least stable health, the answer is
yes. IF your veterinarian is comfortable with senior pet or higher risk
anesthesia, the answer is yes. IF the right anesthetic regimen and right
monitoring protocol is used, the answer is yes. At our practice we use a
more holistic approach to anesthesia, and most simple procedures such
as a dental cleaning or tumor removal are done with sedation or light
anesthesia, making it safer than the more common full anesthetic protocol often used. Many new clients come to our practice because their
vets consider it unsafe to anesthetize their older pets. We respond that
if your previous vet is uncomfortable with older pet anesthesia, believe
him! We’re more than happy to help the special senior citizens of the pet
world get the care they deserve and need using a holistic approach.”
