JOINT CONCERN

O

ne type of pain that dental patients find most concerning
involves the “temporomandibular joints,” which act as
hinges between the temporal bone of the skull and the lower
jaw (mandible). Among the most complex joints in the body,
these joints not only hinge open and closed, but they also slide forward and backward,
allowing us to chew, talk, and yawn. When problems, called “temporomandibular
dysfunction” (TMD), arise in these joints or their surrounding muscles and ligaments,
radiating pain and limited jaw movement often result. The dentist can diagnose and
treat jaw pain and TMD that are caused by missing teeth; jaw clenching; tooth grinding
(bruxism); poor bite (malocclusion); or bad habits (nail biting, pencil chewing, etc.).
When pain interferes with the enjoyment of your life, making it impossible to talk,
yawn, chew, and perform other simple daily acts of living, you don’t need to just accept
it as the norm. Turn instead to the office of RICHARD SEIDLER, D.D.S. – FAMILY
DENTISTRY for a treatment plan for a pain-free future. Learn why others in our
community make our office at 5000 Main St. at South Colony Boulevard, Suite 206,
The Colony, the go-to place for comprehensive family dental care. You can reach us at
972-625-2222.
P.S. TMD caused by tooth grinding can
sometimes be relieved with a custom-fitted mouth
splint that is worn while sleeping.
