On Sunday afternoon, Oct. 23, members of the Frisco community gathered at the Hyatt Regency in Stonebriar Centre for an official lamp lighting and celebration of Diwali, popularly known as the "Festival of Lights".
Diwali, or Deepawali, is celebrated by members of many faiths including Hindu, Jain, Buddhist and Sikh. The word Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepawali, which means "a row of lights."
During Sunday's celebration, local youth and adults participated in dance and musical performances before and after the official lamp lighting, conducted by Frisco Mayor Jeff Cheney with assistance of various city, school and community leaders. There were vendor booths for event-goers to visit and traditional snacks to enjoy.
The event was sponsored by the Frisco Inclusion Committee.
Diwali is the center point of a five-day festival. Festivities include the illumination of lights to symbolize the victory of good over evil, inner light over spiritual darkness and knowledge over ignorance.Â
The Frisco Diwali planning committee was led by Sunitha Cheruvu, Sonia Bhatia Lopez, Sangita Datta, Pavan Nelutla and Chinnasatyam Veernapu.
