Little Elm pitcher Lauren Lucas was named co-MVP of District 8-5A alongside The Colony standout Jayda Coleman.

District 8-5A softball featured some of the top talent in the state and it starts with standouts from the two teams that finished head and shoulders above the rest – The Colony and Little Elm.

The Colony went on to go undefeated in district play before reaching the state semifinals in a season-ending loss to Calallen. Little Elm, on the other hand, defeated every team in 8-5A except for the Lady Cougars before taking a magical trip through the postseason that saw the Lady Lobos land in the fifth round for the first time in program history.

It’s only fitting that the two stellar programs featured the two most productive players in the district in The Colony’s Jayda Coleman and Little Elm’s Lauren Lucas.

Coleman, a McDonald’s All-American, hit .707 with 21 doubles, five triples, eight homers, 31 RBIs and 72 stolen bases. But perhaps the most impressive stat on Coleman’s resume is that she scored more than half of the time she stepped to the plate (76 runs in 150 plate appearances).

“Jayda is an amazing player and is fun to watch,” said Jill Miller, Little Elm head coach. “I really enjoy watching and coaching good softball, and it is so much fun to watch players like Jayda who truly enjoy the game.”

With those out-of-this-world numbers, Coleman seemed a shoo-in for District MVP but ended up sharing that honor with Lucas, who produced a jaw-dropping season of her own for the Lady Lobos.

In 37 games, the Wichita State commit hit .643 with 15 doubles, 11 triples, seven home runs and a whopping 63 RBIs.

“She’s a force to be reckoned with on offense, and people walk her if they have to,” Miller said. “She led our team in every major batting category. She’s also a leader and the girls look to her for leadership.”

But her damage on the diamond didn’t end there, as Lucas was only one of the more dominant pitchers in the area with a 1.53 ERA that included 24 wins and 210 strikeouts.

It was only fitting that the two superstars were named co-MVPs of 8-5A when it was all said and done.

Lucas wasn’t the only Lady Lobo to earn a superlative this season, as senior third baseman Izzi Fielder took home Co-Utility Player of the Year honors after making the moving around from shortstop, to catcher and then to third base where she played at most of the season.

As the team’s leadoff hitter, Fielder also led Little Elm in plate appearances with 137 and hit .330 with four doubles, five triples and 39 runs scored.

“She had to move around the infield quite a bit for us, which is one of the reasons why she was named Co-Utility player of the year,” Miller said. “She is going to be a big loss for us.”
