Mesquite ISD offers free meals

Mesquite ISD is offering free meals this summer to children ages 18 and under.

School is out for the summer, and while many students are looking forward to fun summer activities, some will miss out on the meals they get at school. Mesquite ISD is making sure children get fed this summer with its summer food service program.

Free nutritious meals are offered to children ages 1-18. The summer food service program offers breakfast and lunch at select campuses, and the child does not have to be part of MISD to participate, and no advance qualifying or registration is required.

Due to health and sanitary rules, all meals must be eaten on site; no part of the meal may be taken away. Adults may purchase a breakfast for $1.50 and lunch for $3 at most participating locations, according to the district.

At the Aug. 13, 2018 MISD Board of Trustees meeting, during the district’s student nutrition program’s effectiveness report Bette Mogg, director of Food and Nutrition Services, said the summer food service program was offered at 21 campuses and provided 28,000 meals for those between the ages of 1-18.

As of May 1, minus the graduating seniors, where are 32,108 students on free/reduced lunch this ending school year.
