Two Mesquite police officers rescued a man from a burning vehicle early Sunday.

At about 4:11 a.m., the Mesquite Police Department received a call involving a major crash near the south service road of Interstate-30 and Edgebrook Drive. A car involved in the crash was reported to be on fire. Officers arrived at the scene to find that the driver and lone occupant was in the burning car, unconscious.

Officers Nielson and Soto pulled the victim, whose clothing was on fire, from the car and carried him to safety. Police did not release the officers' first names.

Investigators concluded that the only vehicle involved in the crash was traveling east in the 3100 block of I-30 when it left the roadway and struck a steel pillar that supported a highway sign. The driver, Mesquite resident Hector Valles, 25, was transported by the Mesquite Fire Department to Baylor Hospital of Dallas with burns and internal injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, according to police.
