Mesquite wrapped up its district season over a week ago, with its bye slated for the final round of games, and all the Skeeters (4-8) could do was sit back and watch to see what their potential playoff future would be, as Royse City and Tyler Legacy each had a chance to match or surpass them in the standings.
When the dust settled, the Bulldogs (4-8) were able to eke out a 4-3 win over North Forney to forge a tie for fourth place and set up a play-in game on Saturday.
That was also a tight affair, but Royse City was able to do just enough to edge the Skeeters for a 2-1 victory to deny Mesquite back-to-back playoff appearances.
The Raiders (3-9) had drawn the tough assignment of taking on a Rockwall team that itself was trying to hold on for the 10-6A championship, and the Yellowjackets did just that, holding on for a 5-3 win on Friday to finish 11-1 and wrap up the outright district crown and the top seed in the playoffs.
Rockwall used five different pitchers, with Keller Lindeman posting two innings of hitless ball to pick up the win, Dylan Garcia doubled and drove in two and Micah Kendrick and Remington Spoerl also had RBIs.
Rockwall-Heath (10-2) was hoping for a Yellowjacket loss to forge a tie for the 10-6A championship, but while that was not meant to be, it did close the regular season on a high note, edging Horn (2-10), 5-4.
Drake McIver went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, two runs scored and one batted in, Bradley Haydicky was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, and Brayden Langham was 3-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in.
Top-seeded Rockwall will take on Naaman Forest, who edged Rowlett by a game for the fourth and final playoff berth out of 9-6A.
The Rangers will host the Yellowjackets in Game 1 at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, with the series switching to Rockwall at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the third game at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wylie East.
Sachse will be facing North Forney, the third seed out of 10-6A in the bi-district round of the playoffs. The opener is slated for 7 p.m. Thursday at Sachse. Game 2 shifts to 7 p.m. Friday at North Forney, with the third game, if necessary, slated for 1 p.m. Saturday at Royse City.
Wylie East, who shared the 9-6A title with Sachse but edged the Mustangs in the seeding game, will face Royse City.
The series is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Royse City, with the second game set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wylie East and the third game, if necessary, at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rockwall.
Wylie draws Rockwall-Heath in what should be one of the best first-round match-ups in the area.
The Pirates and Hawks will lock horns at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Wylie, switch to Rockwall-Heath at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the third game, if needed, at 1 p.m. Saturday at McKinney Boyd.
