In a battle of the only two 2-0 teams, the Pirates claimed a 50-44 victory over Greenville on Friday to take over sole possession of first place.
West Mesquite dropped to 0-3 with a 65-52 loss to Highland Park. The difference was the second quarter when the Scots outscored the Wranglers 23-11 to open a 36-23 halftime lead.
The second half was relatively even, but West Mesquite was unable to make a dent in its deficit.
Kyler Wigenton tallied a game-high 19 points for the Wranglers, with Rollins Carrie also in double figures with 10 and Adam Henderson adding eight.
Highland Park got 14 points from Coleson Messer, 12 from Camp Wagner and 10 from Luke Hardenburg.
Joining Greenville and Highland Park at 2-1 are Forney and Royse City.
The Jackrabbits posted a 67-57 victory over crosstown rival North Forney. Forney outscored the Falcons 36-21 in the first half and then kept them at arm’s length the rest of the way.
Nick Bene had a big night with 31 points, Jayden Jefferson had 12 and Gernarius Edwards added 11 to pace the Jackrabbits.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, picked up a 72-60 win at the expense of Crandall.
Poteet will shoot for its fourth district win in a row when it hosts Royse City on Tuesday. Greenville travels to take on Forney in a battle of 2-1 teams, Highland Park is at home against Crandall and West Mesquite hosts North Forney looking for its first 13-5A win.
