Poteet showed no signs of rust from the Christmas holidays, as it returned to the 13-5A slate on Tuesday by improving to 2-0 with a 63-47 victory over North Forney.
The Pirates closed each of the halves strong. After leading by just one at the end of one quarter, they outscored the Falcons 17-8 in the second to open a double-digit halftime lead.
North Forney chipped away at the deficit in the third quarter to make it interesting, but Poteet outscored them 19-10 down the stretch to pull away and secure the win.
The Pirates got a huge night from Derrick Martin, who poured in a game-high 32 points. Jakobey Kahey was also in double figures with 12 points, with Jaran Young adding nine. The Falcons got eight points from Davez Carr and seven each from Chris Miller and Ledarius Jones.
West Mesquite was not as fortunate, as it slipped to 0-2 after its comeback fell short with a 62-57 loss to Crandall.
The Pirates started strong with a 15-6 run and built a 32-14 halftime lead. But the Wranglers were not finished, cutting into the deficit in the third quarter and outscoring Crandall 23-13 in the fourth to make it interesting, but it was not quite enough.
Greenville joined Poteet with a 2-0 start with a 79-73 victory over Royse City, while Highland Park edged Forney, 50-49.
Coleson Messer tallied 17 points to lead the Scots, with Rhodes Crow and Luke Hardenburg adding 12 and eight, respectively. Nick Bene scored 19 points, Gernarius Edwards had 11 and Ayden McDonald chipped in with seven for the Jackrabbits.
After Friday, only one 13-5A team will be undefeated as Poteet travels to take on Greenville. West Mesquite is also on the road as it searches for its first district win against Highland Park, North Forney hosts Forney and Royse City is at home to take on Crandall.
