The most highly-anticipated game of the 6-5A Division II season arrived on Friday as Poteet took on South Oak Cliff.
The Pirates certainly had their chances, but it was the Bears that gained the inside track to the district title with a 27-14 victory at Kincaide Stadium.
South Oak Cliff took the early lead on a field goal by Antonio Loya and the first of three rushing touchdowns from Cam Davis gave them a 10-0 first-quarter lead.
With the offense stalling against the tough Bears defense, it was the Pirate defense that rose to the occasion, as Jeremiah Anukem picked off a pass and returned it 46 yards to the end zone. Poteet added the two-point conversion to close to within 10-8.
South Oak Cliff responded with a big play as Davis broke free for a 60-yard scoring run, but the Pirates were able to get a field goal from Nicholas Aguilar to get back to within 17-11 at halftime.
Poteet edged closer on Aguilar’s second field goal of the game, but the Bears got one of their own and then turned back to Davis, who ripped off a 73-yard touchdown run to push it to 27-14 and that is the way it would stay.
South Oak Cliff improves to 3-0 in district and is tied for first place with Kimball, who had a bye.
Poteet falls to 3-1, but is still well-positioned in a tie for third with Seagoville.
This week’s slate does not figure to sport a lot of intrigue, as the Pirates have a bye and the other trio at the top of the standings will all be heavy favorites.
