Former Eastfield coach Bob Flickner will be inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame this year.
Bob Flickner, who led Eastfield College to 423 victories in 23 seasons, is one of three members of the Class of 2016 that will be inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame this year.
Flickner, who retired from coaching in 1998 but still teaches physical education at Eastfield, received the news from current Eastfield athletic director and basketball coach Anthony Fletcher, who submitted the nomination.
“I was quite surprised,” Flickner said. “I feel very blessed and fortunate that I had hundreds of good players as well as the support of good administrators, assistants, secretaries and family along the way. I was a part of it, but it was just a part.”
During Flickner’s tenure, the Harvesters compiled a 178-44 record in the Metro Athletic Conference and won 15 conference titles during one 16-year stretch, including 12 in a row. They advanced to the NJCAA national tournament 10 times from 1986-1998.
In 1997, five years after a national runner-up finish, Eastfield defeated Jefferson Community College (N.Y.) 79-75 to win the NJCAA national championship.
“There were a lot of great highlights,” Flickner said. “Coaching my son (current Dallas Baptist men’s basketball coach Blake Flickner) and seeing him recognized as an All-American for his academic work was one of my proudest moments. I’m just so thankful for all of the efforts and time all of those players put in. It’s really neat to look around now and see how well they’re doing. They’re FBI agents and dentists, coaches and athletic directors and teachers. They’re out doing good things in the community and being responsible citizens. That’s the most rewarding thing to see.”
Prior to coming to Eastfield in 1975, Flickner served as an assistant for his alma mater, Bethel College, in Kansas from 1970-72. He then served as a graduate assistant for the University of Kansas and was on the staff in 1974 when the Jayhawks reached the NCAA Final Four.
In addition to his coaching duties, Flickner served as athletic director at Eastfield College for 14 years and was instrumental in leading the Dallas County Community College District to join the NJCAA. He was recently recognized by Eastfield College for his 40 years of service to the district as an educator.
