Last season, Poteet won four of its final five games. While it was not enough to make a playoff push, it did lie the foundation for what the Pirates could accomplish this year.
That momentum carried over into this campaign and Poteet put together a banner season as they returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
The Pirates were rewarded for their efforts with eight selections to the 13-5A all-district team, highlighted by a pair of superlative awards.
Senior Jorge Colon Benitez was voted as the defensive most valuable player. Benitez made only two errors in 69 chances from his shortstop position for a fielding percentage of .971. He was also a key cog in the lineup, hitting .320 with two triples, three doubles, 13 runs and 21 runs batted in.
Jason Wright earned co-coach of the year honors after guiding the Pirates to a 20-13-1 record, including a second-place 10-2 mark in district, and a return to the playoffs.
Poteet had five players named to the first team.
Junior pitcher Steven Fink proved to be one of the best all-around players in the district. Fink posted a .342 batting average, leading the team with 27 hits and 11 doubles to go along with a pair of triples and 16 RBIs. As part of the starting rotation, he went 8-3 with a 2.68 earned run average and 63 strikeouts in 49.2 innings.
The other member of that starting rotation, senior Gilbert De Los Santos, also claimed first-team honors. De Los Santos posted a 6-3 record with a minuscule 1.44 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 53.1 innings.
Junior first baseman Jackson Huber provided the power in the middle of the Poteet lineup, leading the team with six home runs and 27 runs batted in. He hit .300 with six doubles and 17 runs scored. Huber also contributed on the mound, going 2-2 with one save, a 3.00 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 32.2 innings.
Junior left fielder Michael Buckley had a .343 batting average with two doubles, one triple, 12 runs and 15 RBIs.
Sophomore center fielder Adam Byrd set the table for the Pirates from the leadoff spot. He hit .277 with a .370 on-base percentage. Byrd led the team with five triples, 26 stolen bases and 30 runs scored.
Junior catcher Coleman Camp earned honorable mention recognition after providing six doubles and seven runs batted in at the plate and posting a .992 fielding percentage behind it.
Poteet should be poised to make another run next season, with Fink, Huber, Buckley, Byrd and Camp among those expected to return.
District champion Forney captured three superlative awards. Senior pitcher/first baseman/third baseman Will Morgan was voted the 13-5A most valuable player, senior Austin Ream was tabbed pitcher of the year and Jason Farrow earned co-coach of the year honors.
Kaufman senior utility player Cade Currington was selected as the offensive most valuable player and North Forney sophomore third baseman Elian Gonzales was chosen as the newcomer of the year.
Rounding out the major awards, Terrell freshman first baseman/pitcher Jason Gomez and Kaufman sophomore utility player Junior Maldonado were tabbed co-underclassmen of the year.
