As concerns over climate change continue to grow, there has been a sustained effort towards electrification, or the process of replacing technologies that use fossil fuels with those that use electricity for energy. The electrification movement is putting many traditional mechanical occupations at risk, such as auto mechanics—in part because electric vehicles require less maintenance and repair than traditional cars—while also creating new opportunities, particularly in the energy sector: wind turbine service technicians and solar photovoltaic installers have significant growth projections over the next decade. The landscape for mechanically-inclined workers varies by location, however. Researchers calculated the share of mechanically-inclined workers out of all workers, then ranked metros and states accordingly.
