Derrick Steven Lanham, age 23, of Cotulla, Texas passed away on April 17, 2016 in Austin, Texas. He was born on April 23, 1992 in Carrollton, Texas to Rhonda DeAnn (Swift) and Steven Allen Lanham. Derrick was raised in The Colony, Texas. He was a baptized and confirmed member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Derrick graduated The Colony High School in 2011, where he played Cougar football all four years. His senior year, Derrick was awarded the Tommy Briggs Fighting Cougar Award and Defensive Line All District Honorable Mention. He had a starting position on the Varsity team as a Defensive End where he was a part of the ‘Dog Soldiers’. Derrick was always a mentor to his fellow ‘dog soldiers’ and future ‘dog soldiers’ to come. Derrick also participated in wrestling and powerlifting.
After graduation, Derrick enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he graduated boot camp in San Diego, California on September 16, 2011. He joined 3rd Battalion, 11th Marines, as a supply clerk, combat marksmanship coach and combat marksmanship trainer in Twenty-nine Palms, California. He trained and mentored over 6000 marines in his years of service. He served from 2011 to 2014. Derrick was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. During his service Derrick was awarded the National Defense, Global War on Terror and Good Conduct Medals. He also achieved a 3rd award Rifle Expert and 2nd award Pistol Expert.
Derrick married his middle school sweetheart, Kamy Farrell of The Colony, Texas, on April 7, 2012. Derrick and Kamy spent the first years of their marriage in Twenty-nine Palms, California, and moved to Cotulla, Texas, after his discharge from the Marine Corp. Derrick joined O’Reilly Auto Parts where he was promoted to Manager.
Derrick had a kind soul and would give you the shirt off his back. Derrick’s smile and bright blue eyes could light up a room and his laugh was contagious. His bear hugs warmed you and touched your soul. He was an inspiration to everyone that crossed his path. Derrick cherished his family and friends. Derrick was a man to be admired and will be dearly missed.
Derrick is survived by his wife, Kamy E. Lanham of Cotulla, Texas; parents, Rhonda Lanham and Bill Degener of The Colony, Texas and Steven Lanham and his wife, Grace, of Riverview, Florida; father and mother-in-law, Anthony Farrell and his wife, Amy, of Cotulla, Texas; six aunts and uncles, Rick Swift, Juli McCarthy, Rodney Swift, Lyndell Growing, Duane Lanham and Ronald Lanham; grandparents, Richard Swift and his wife, Barbara, of The Colony, Texas and Patricia Orosz of Toledo, Ohio; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

In place of flowers, Derrick’s family requests a donation be made to your local Veteran’s Ad-ministration or Wounded Warriors Project in honor of Derrick.
A funeral service was held on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 10:30 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Interment followed at Dallas-Ft Worth National Cemetery with military honors being rendered at 2:15 PM.
