The Downtown Plano Arts District is up for the title of America’s Best Main Street. The historic neighborhood, known for its turn-of-the-century architecture, vibrant retail district and bustling arts scene, was ranked earlier this month by Livability.com as one of the top ten downtowns in the nation. Last October, the American Planners Association named Historic Downtown Plano one of four Great Neighborhoods on the organization’s annual Great Places in America list.
“Anyone who visits or lives here in downtown Plano will tell you it’s the best Main Street in the country,” said Alex Hargis, executive director for the Historic Downtown Plano Association. “We do not need an official title to tell us what we already know, but I do believe our great downtown can win the grand prize.”
Hargis adds that a vote for Plano is a vote for historic awesomeness.
The first voting round began March 1, and continues through April 24. Each Plano resident is eligible to vote once a day.
If awarded the grand prize in July, Plano would receive $25,000 to fund the downtown mural project. The neighborhood would also get a celebratory ice cream social for residents.
