There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports reporter David Wolman's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Tanner Sever, Coppell baseball
Sever and senior Zack Darkoch each had five hits to lead the Cowboys to a 2-1-1 record in a home tournament last weekend with victories against Celina and Prosper, in addition to a 3-3 tie against Lovejoy. Coppell entered Wednesday night’s District 6-6A opener against Hebron with a 7-5-1 record.
Stanley Zamora, Lake Dallas boys soccer
Zamora had a four-point night with three goals and an assist in a 5-2 win over Denton on March 10. The Broncos scored the game’s first goal, but the Falcons rallied with four of the next five tallies. Lake Dallas scored four times in the second half to break a 1-1 tie. On Monday, the Falcons defeated Birdville, 7-1, to clinch the District 7-5A title.
Landon DeLeeuw, Flower Mound boys soccer
DeLeeuw scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Jaguars to a 4-1 victory against Plano West in Tuesday’s regular-season finale. With the win, Flower Mound clinched second place in District 6-6A. The Jaguars will open the Class 6A playoffs with a bi-district clash against McKinney Boyd.
Hannah Campos, Marcus girls soccer
The Lady Marauders are back-to-back champions of District 6-6A. Campos recorded two goals in Monday’s 6-0 win against Plano East, a victory that clinched the district title for Marcus. The Lady Marauders seek a third straight appearance in the regional final, and hopefully, the state tournament. Marcus draws Denton Guyer in bi-district.
Wesley Peck, The Colony baseball
Peck had a complete-game, no-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead the Cougars to an 8-0 victory against Creekview in the District 9-5A opener on Tuesday. It is the first no-hitter thrown by The Colony since Devin Reyna accomplished the feat in a 12-0 victory for the Cougars against Prosper Rock Hill on March 19, 2021.
