There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports reporter David Wolman's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Abigail Counts, Flower Mound track and field
Last Friday was a historic day on the track for Counts, winning state titles in the seated shot put, wheelchair 100-meter dash and wheelchair 400. With a distance of 19-10.75, Counts obliterated the state record in the girls seated shot put. In the 400 wheelchair, Counts won with a time of 1:05.34 – more than 15 second faster than the event’s runner-up. And in the 100 wheelchair, she posted a winning time of 18.68.
Emma Sralla, Marcus track and field
Having already produced two of the top eight discus throws in national history this season, with marks of 195-10 and 193-8, she cemented her status Saturday afternoon by winning her second straight state title with a throw of 184 feet. Sralla has been chasing the national record of 198-9 set by Olympian Shelbi Vaughn from Mansfield Legacy in 2012.
Jacob Gholston, Flower Mound baseball
- LORRAINE HAAN-STEWART
There were many heroes for the Jaguars in their two-game sweep of South Grand Prairie in the area round of the Class 6A playoffs. After junior Zack James tossed a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win in Game 1, Gholston followed with a gem of his own in a 9-0 win for Flower Mound in Game 2. Gholston struck out 11 and allowed just four hits in seven shutout innings.
Skyler Schuller, Coppell track and field
After finishing in second place in the Class 6A girls pole vault in each of the last two seasons at the state meet, Schuller won her first state title last Saturday with a 13-6. Schuller missed her first attempt but made the necessary adjustments to go on to win state. She will continue her track and field career at Stanford.
Stalee Fields, Hebron girls golf
Fields concluded her sophomore season in impressive fashion, placing fourth in the Class 6A girls state golf tournament with a two-under par 142. After shooting a bogey on the first hole to begin each round, Fields had just one bogey over the other 33 holes with six birdies. She shot 71 on Monday and 70 on Tuesday for a 141. Fields won the District 6-6A tournament and tied for fourth at the Region I-6A tournament.
