There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports reporter David Wolman's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Nic Codie, Newman Smith boys basketball
The Trojans used a late flurry to pull away for a 47-42 victory against The Colony on Tuesday to earn their 10th straight victory. Codie had another big game for Newman Smith as he finished with a game-high 21 points. Newman Smith moved to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in District 9-5A.
Jules LaMendola, Coppell girls basketball
On Monday, the Cowgirls earned their first No. 1 state ranking in program history. One day later, Coppell backed up that top ranking in a 66-44 triumph against Class 6A’s No. 11 Flower Mound. LaMendola set the tone offensively, tallying 22 points in the victory.
Dylan Koele, Lake Dallas girls basketball
After losing two of their first three District 7-5A games, the Lady Falcons righted the ship Tuesday with a 50-36 victory against Grapevine. Junior forward Koele provided the offensive spark, scoring a season-high 22 points. Lake Dallas improved to 12-12, 2-2 on the season.
Alex Tung, Coppell boys basketball
Tung has emerged as one of the go-to scorers for Coppell. The senior guard continued his stellar play Tuesday evening, recording a game-high 20 points for the Cowboys in a 64-29 triumph against Flower Mound. Coppell improved to 18-5 overall and 1-1 in District 6-6A.
Aaliyah Brown, The Colony girls basketball

It’s been quite the turnaround for the Lady Cougars. After winning four district games all of last season, The Colony defeated Newman Smith, 54-39, on Tuesday to improve to 4-0 in District 9-5A and 16-8 overall. Senior forward Aaliyah Brown had another big game for the Lady Cougars, pouring in a game-high 18 points.
