Mexico Beats Puerto Rico in WBC Quarterfinal

The World Baseball Classic is back after a six-year wait. With an expanded field of 20 teams, the United States will attempt to defend its 2016 title.

March 17: Mexico defeated Puerto Rico, 5-4, on Friday night to become the third team to clinch a berth in the World Baseball Classic semifinals, which start on Sunday.
Puerto Rico led off the game by scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. But, eventually, Mexico rallied, as a three-run seventh inning put it in the for good.
The only remaining quarterfinal is Venezuela against the United States on Saturday.
March 16: Japan became the second team to punch its ticket for the semifinals of the World Baseball Classic, defeated Italy, 9-3.
Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels was the winning pitcher for Japan, as he won his second game of the WBC. Ohtani also went 1-for-4 and scored twice.
Cuba was the first team to advance to the semifinals after defeating Australia, 4-3.

March 15: New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was injured during Puerto Rico's celebration of its 5-2 win over the Dominican Republic during the conclusion of pool play action.
Diaz closed out the victory and was surrounding by his teammates in celebration. That led shortly to those same teammates motioning to team trainers after Diaz was hurt.
He needed to be helped into a wheelchair to get him off the field. The Mets tweeted that he had a left knee injury and that he would undergo further evaluation on Thursday.

March 7: The United States will start pitcher Adam Wainwright for its first game of pool play in the World Baseball Classic, MLB.com reported on Tuesday.
Team USA is set to play Great Britain on Saturday in the first game of pool play action.
The 41-year old Wainwright is coming off an 11-12 season with St. Louis in 2022. He will play his 18th season of Major League Baseball for the Cardinals in 2023.
March 4: Multiple media outlets reported on Saturday that Toronto infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will not play for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.
Guerrero has a right knee injury that will keep him out of the tournament, per Nelson Cruz, who is serving as the general manager for the DR team.
The injury to the All-Star is being called minor inflammation.
The first baseman batted .274/.339/.480 with 32 home runs, 97 RBIs, and 116 strikeouts.
Feb. 28: Jurickson Profar, a former Texas Rangers player who at the moment remains a free agent, will play for Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, per MLB.com.
Profar is expected to play left field.
Profar hit .243 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI last season for San Diego.
Feb. 18: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw called not being able to pitch for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic "super-disappointing."
Kershaw told reporters he was 100 percent healthy when he announced the news. He didn't disclose why, but ESPN and other outlets reported that it was likely that Kershaw was not able to obtain insurance for his contract, which is a WBC requirement.
Kershaw will remain in spring training with the Dodgers. He is signed through 2023.
Feb. 13: New York Yankees pitcher Nestor Cortes Jr. will reportedly not pitch in the World Baseball Classic after tweaking his hamstring, per The Athletic.
Cortes was set to pitch for Team USA, which is the defending champion.
