RL TURNER GRIDIRON

It has been since 2001 when R.L. Turner last qualified for the playoffs, and while reaching the postseason may prove more than difficult in a new-look District 4-5A Division I, the Lions are still hopeful to take strides in that direction under first-year head coach Isaiah Young — who takes over for Michael Ramirez following a promotion within the C-FB ISD athletic department.

Young, a former defensive coordinator with the Lions, has talent and experience to work with on the offensive side of the ball, including junior quarterback Connor Hultman.

As a sophomore, Hultman started multiple games, completing 43 percent of his passes for 803 yards and four touchdowns against nine interceptions while also chipping in an additional four rushing scores.

Speaking of rushing, senior Bryson Looney returns in the backfield after gaining 599 yards and four touchdowns as a junior.

Senior wide receiver Kyrece Williams, meanwhile, was a second-team all-district choice and posted 41 receptions for 574 yards and three touchdowns.

Rounding out Turner’s returning all-district players on the offensive side is senior center Steven Rico, while senior Christian Ramos, senior Christian Jimenez and junior Major Ervin are also expected to occupy starting spots in the trenches.

Defensively, senior Daniel Saldana is Turner’s unquestioned leader and earned all-district honors (second team) a year ago after posting 48 tackles and three sacks on the defensive line.

Defensive back Genesis Solomon recording 58 tackles and had a pair of interceptions last season and is primed to take another step forward as a senior.

Other key pieces in the defensive rotation include senior defensive lineman Cristian Vazquez, junior defensive back Brian Rodriguez, junior defensive lineman Julian Galindo and senior linebacker Luis DeLara.
