Liberty’s postseason drought stands at six years entering this season as the Redhawks look to buck that trend this fall and make the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
That will be much easier said than done coming off of a 1-6 district record a year ago while also facing even tougher district competition in 2018 in 5-5A Division I.
It certainly helps to have your starting quarterback return and that’s exactly the luxury Liberty will have this season with senior Mitchell Miller coming back after a solid junior campaign.
Last season, Miller produced over 1,300 total yards of offense and 12 touchdowns and has two big targets returning to throw to as well. Senior tight end Lucas Pickard, who checks in at 6-foot-5, will look to be a key component for the Redhawks’ offensive aerial attack, as well as junior wide receiver Keavon Wright.
Replacing Dimitri Jones at running back is no easy task, but it appears as if the player that is going to step in and fill that void in the backfield is senior Kris Harris.
The bread and butter of this team, however, is on the defensive line, led by seniors Josh Burtch and Myron Huff.
Burtch, who is the son of head coach Chris Burtch, is one of the more dominant defensive ends in the district and is excellent at rushing the passer and recorded four sacks last season.
Josh Burtch and Huff are two of just four returning defensive starters that look to improve as a unit after allowing at least 38 points in every game but two in 2017.
Something that could help the Redhawks tremendously this season is opening things up with two extremely winnable back-to-back contests to begin the season.
Liberty opens the year against North Garland, which has just nine wins since 2010, and then plays Creekview in Week Two. If the Redhawks can start the year 2-0 that may just be all the confidence they need heading into district play.
