In their first year in varsity competition, the Frisco Emerson football Mavericks are headed to the playoffs as the second seed in District 3-5A Division II after a 42-28 win over Frisco Independence Thursday night at the Ford Center.
The win ends the Mavericks regular season with a 5-1 district record, 9-1 overall. Independence ends the regular season 8-2, 4-2 in district play.
Emerson and Independence will open bi-district playoff action at a date, time and location to be determined, but they both know their opponents. Emerson will play Colleyville Heritage (7-3), while Independence will battle Arlington Heights (9-1).
It was a closely contested game until Emerson pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 21-7 scoring edge.
The Mavericks broke a 21-21 tie early in the fourth quarter when running back Ishaqq Bills rushed for a 53-yard touchdown. The extra point put Bills' team up 28-21.
But Independence tied the game again when Ude Enyeribe matched Bills' long TD run with one of his own, a 64-yard jaunt to tie the game at 28 after the good PAT.
But soon after Emerson would blow the game open. Quarterback Darryl Shelton hit Matheus Machado for a 32-yard score, and later in the quarter, Shelton used his feet and speed to score on a 44-yard TD run to secure the win.
Shelton finished with two passing TDs and two rushing TDs to led the Mavericks. He threw for 190 yards and rushed for another 32 yards. Machado was the top receiver for Emerson with two TD receptions and 112 yards total.
Bills led Emerson on the ground with 82 yards and a score.
Enyeribe led the Knights on the ground with 197 yards and two scores. Quarterback Matteo Quattrin also threw for two TDs for the Knights on 177 yards passing.
