There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports editor Matt Welch's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Antranik Souza, McKinney boys soccer
The Lions' leading scorer came through big on Tuesday, netting the go-ahead goal in McKinney's 2-1 stunner against No. 3 state-ranked Allen. Souza and the Lions have picked up at least one point in each of their past four matches to move into third place in the district following Tuesday's pivotal win.
Â
Justin McBride, Plano boys basketball
McBride came up big on both ends of the floor on Friday to help the Wildcats hold off No. 6-ranked Highland Park in the area round of the playoffs. In addition to scoring 20 points in the win, including key baskets in the fourth quarter, McBride was a fortress on the defense with a staggering 12 blocks — a rare points-blocks double-double to help send Plano to the regional quarterfinals.
Kennedy Bradley, Prosper Rock Hill softball
Only a freshman, Bradley has carved out early reps at shortstop for the Lady Blue Hawks and impressed at the plate during the team's tournament run through Allen. For the week, Bradley logged a .583 batting average with a .643 on-base percentage, tallying one home run, five RBIs and three stolen bases.
Robbi Curry, Allen girls soccer
The Lady Eagles control their own destiny for the 5-6A championship and picked up their fifth straight win on Tuesday with a 5-0 shutout of McKinney. While Allen spread the wealth on the attack, Curry has been a constant in goal as part of three consecutive clean sheets for the Lady Eagles' defense. Allen has shut out seven district opponents in 11 matches.
Shelby Henderson, McKinney Boyd girls soccer
Last season's 5-6A goalkeeper of the year, Henderson and the Lady Broncos were locked in defensively Tuesday night against state-ranked Prosper. Boyd scored its biggest win of the 2023 season thus far, shutting out the Lady Eagles 1-0 and handing Prosper its first district loss since 2020. It was Boyd's sixth clean sheet in district play.
