There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports editor Matt Welch's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Jayden Walker, McKinney North football
Walker was recently recognized as a selection to the 2023 Whataburger Dave Campbell's Super Team. The Bulldogs' standout running back finished among the area's leading rushers last season, amassing 2,107 yards on the ground and 22 touchdowns to help lead North to the postseason.
RJ Ruais, Celina baseball
The Bobcats' all-time hits leader was plenty efficient at the plate during his team's two-game sweep of Life Waxahachie in the regional quarterfinals. For the series, Ruais went 4-of-8 and totaled seven RBIs and three runs scored. He also earned the win on the mound in Game 2, pitching four innings where he allowed just one run on one hit and struck out seven.

Sara Morefield, Lovejoy track and field
Morefield ran the fourth-fastest 2K steeplechase time in Texas high school history during last weekend's Texas Track and Field Coaches Association Meet of Champions. The Lovejoy distance runner, fresh off winning a bronze medal in the 3,200 at the state meet, clocked a 7:00.15 to finish first overall in the race.
Brett Lanman, Lovejoy baseball
Lanman helped keep the Leopards' hopes alive in Game 2 of their regional quarterfinal series against Whitehouse. In what would be Lanman's final appearance of the season, the left-hander allowed just one run on two hits in a complete-game effort with a whopping 15 strikeouts and no walks to lead Lovejoy to a 3-1 victory that evened the best-of-3 series.
Â
Ethan Fang, Plano West golf
Fang closed out his high school golf career in impressive fashion on Tuesday, finishing second overall at the Class 6A state tournament. Fang carded rounds of 67 and 69 to total a 136 over two days played at Georgetown's Legacy Hills Golf Club. The Wolves finished fifth overall as a team.
