There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports editor Matt Welch's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Brady Coe, Allen baseball
Coe came up big in the Eagles' series-clinching game against state-ranked Marcus on Friday. The right-hander pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks, and showcased some timely plate discipline in the 10th inning when he drew a bases-loaded walk to clinch a 1-0 win for Allen.
Marcella Jaques, John Paul II softball
Jaques set the tone and then some during the Lady Cardinals' 15-0 blowout of Houston St. Pius X in Monday's regional playoff game. She homered on her first two at-bats of the afternoon and went on to hit 3-of-4 with two runs and five RBIs to help send the Lady Cardinals back to the TAPPS state tournament.
Izzy Dunn, Plano West softball
Dunn enjoyed an efficient area-round playoff series against Arlington. Over the course of the Lady Wolves' two-game sweep, Dunn went 5-of-6 from the plate and reached base in 7-of-9 plate appearances. She added a double, three runs, four RBIs and drew a pair of walks.
Connor Jarzombek, McKinney Christian baseball
Jarzombek helped pitch the Mustangs to their second appearance in the TAPPS state tournament in three years after downing district opponent Brook Hill, 2-0, in Monday's regional playoff game. Jarzombek helped Brook Hill, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters over 5.1 scoreless innings pitched to earn the win.
Caden Mitchell, Celina baseball
The No. 2-ranked Bobcats made short work of Lincoln in the bi-district round of the playoffs and Mitchell contributed plenty to his team's 15-0 run-rule victory. Mitchell turned in one productive plate appearance after another, going 1-of-1 with two runs, three RBIs and two walks drawn in the team's postseason opener.
