There's no shortage of noteworthy performances turned in by student-athletes around the area. Each week, Star Local Media's sports staff will recognize five student-athletes from their respective coverage areas as part of its 5-Star Spotlight.
Here are a few athletes from sports editor Matt Welch's coverage area who have turned in standout moments over the past week.
Jenna Wilkinson, McKinney North girls soccer
Wilkinson accounted for the lone goal in the state-ranked Lady Bulldogs' 1-0 victory over rival Lovejoy on March 10, which clinched the 13-5A title for North. Wilkinson was money on set pieces all match, finding the back of the net on a corner kick during the first half and nearly scoring another on a long free kick in the match's closing minutes.
Jayden Bluitt, Plano softball
The Lady Wildcats found the 6-6A win column on Tuesday in dramatic fashion, upsetting reigning district champion Hebron in nine innings, 5-3. Bluitt went the distance in the extra-inning victory, allowing just one earned run on the night while going 3-of-5 from the plate.
Jackson Rooker, Celina baseball
Rooker continued his hot start to the 2023 season with another big week at the plate. Over a five-game stretch, Rooker hit .643 at the plate with nine hits, including a double, plus five runs, four RBIs and two walks drawn. With an on-base percentage of .706, Rooker added seven stolen bases in a single week.
Aidan Smith, Lovejoy baseball
Despite a loaded slate that included matchups against Southlake Carroll, Marcus, Allen and Coppell, the Leopards' senior outfielder enjoyed a monster week at the plate. Smith hit 7-of-10 with a double, triple and a home run, and he added a trio of stolen bases for state-ranked Lovejoy.
