The 2014 report is not yet; the following is the latest available (2011) information

  • Nationally, an estimated 7.1 million children have asthma
  • Annual costs for asthma in the U.S. reach $56 billion
  • In Texas, approximately 556,000 children have asthma
  • Asthma is one of the most common chronic (long-term) diseases in childhood

According to the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2011 (TDSHS):

  • Asthma is more common among older children than younger children, yet the rate of asthma hospitalization is much higher among young children
  • Asthma hospitalization rates among non-Hispanic black children were significantly higher than other race/ethnic groups in in Public Health Region 3 (PHR3: North Texas) and Texas
  • Childhood asthma hospitalization rates were higher among boys and younger children in PHR 3 and Texas
  • Most children with asthma have missed school because of their asthma
  • Dallas County has the highest number of child asthma hospitalization in PHR 3 and one of the highest child hospitalization rates for asthma
  • Among children age 0-17, 9,280 asthma-related hospitalizations were reported in 2011
    • 45% of child asthma hospitalizations occurred among children 0-4 years
