Killian & the Comeback Kids opens in The Colony this weekend.
The acclaimed film from actor/writer/director Taylor A. Purdee is one of the only fully theatrical films playing in major US cinemas. It opens in The Colony this weekend with a special appearance from the director and cast.
The story of a young mixed race musician forced to return to his rural hometown after an expensive college degree. A chance encounter with a childhood acquaintance gives the summer new direction. Together they build a rag-tag band of other struggling locals for one shot to play a music festival coming to their once prosperous steel town. Armed with only the music, Killian and the band hope to unite the community – if just for one night.
“We knew that we wanted to come when the film hit this part of Texas. The music, the landscapes, the films from here were an inspiration for us,” Purdee said.
He has also expressed surprise at how newly relevant the film, made before the pandemic, has become in an America with record numbers of industries shuttered and young people forced to move home.
Featuring an original soundtrack of 10 new songs supplemented by tracks from NYC's folk and pop scenes, as well as traditionals and popular covers. Including the music of Bandits on the Run (fronted by Apple+'s Adrian Blake Enscoe) and Maddi Jane, as well as the music of Josh Ritter, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and more.
The movie stars Taylor A. Purdee, Emmy Favorites Kassie DePaiva and Nathan Purdee, John Donchak, and Shannon O'Boyle with Maddi Jane & Academy Award Winner Lee Grant.
Killian & the Comeback Kids opens Oct. 23. There is a special weekend Q&A with the director and cast. Galaxy Theatres Grandscape is located at 5740 Grandscape Blvd., Suite 100.
