Teamwork makes the dream work. At least, it did for Dan Corthell and his wife Becky. Just over a year ago the couple introduced “Lucky Pucks,” a portable shuffleboard-like game with a twist.
What began as a hobby among friends has developed into an innovative game that’s taking off across the Metroplex – and with a little luck (and lots of work,) it will one day be a household name.
Why is Lucky Pucks unique?
Lucky Pucks is a game for all occasions. In addition to the flexibility of where you can play, our games are handcrafted here in Texas and can be completely customized with whatever image you would like on the playing surface.
One of the main features that set Lucky Pucks apart from other games is the amount of space it takes up. Another aspect that we love is that you are not limited to a certain number of players and you don't need an even number of players to play. You can play with as few as two to as many as you want.
How often do you play?
Probably way more than I should.
What goals do you have for Lucky Pucks in the near future?
In the beginning, all of the boards and tables were created in our garage. In 2016, we partnered with a local manufacturer here in North Texas, so the immediate future goal is to increase sales and get the games into more places for people to play.
What is your ultimate vision for Lucky Pucks?
I have always thought from the beginning that Lucky Pucks could be a household name. That is the ultimate goal – for people everywhere to have as much fun as we do when playing.
What other activities are you involved in?
I am on the Board of Directors for The Colony Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce as well as part of the Texas Legends family. In addition, I host a local internet-based radio show live each week in Frisco called "Puckin Around Town," where we focus on local small businesses and charities from throughout the region.
What do you like most about The Colony?
The lake has to be at the top of the list. The small-town feel, the business community, our neighbors ... the list goes on and on.
What achievement of yours are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the progress Becky and I have made together with Lucky Pucks in the past year. It has been challenging but fun.
Who are some of your role models?
My parents first and foremost, as they are hard-working individuals that always put family first. They taught me that it wasn't how much you had in your life but who you had in your life. Professionally, it would be my first boss out of college. She taught me so much and showed me how to take things from concept to realization. I still call her boss to this day.
Where is the farthest you've traveled from here?
Originally, I am from a small town in Massachusetts north of Boston and moved here six years ago. I have been to 44 states, Bermuda, USVI, BVI and parts of Canada and Mexico.
If you won the lottery, (and had to spend it on yourself) you would buy...
A house in St. John ... most beautiful place I have ever been, and Becky and I got married there.
If you could have any other job, what would it be and why?
General Manager for the Boston Red Sox. Growing up in the Boston area, I can't think of anything better than that.
What well-known event would you most like to attend?
I was lucky enough to see the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, so the next one to check off the list would be to see the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
Which actor would you choose to play you in a movie?
Someone better looking than me. Brad Pitt? John Hamm?
Do you know any other languages? Which ones would you like to know?
Other than my Boston accent, I don't know any other languages. I’d like to learn Spanish if I ever have the time.
Is there anything about you that often surprises people?
When I tell people that I have four brothers and three sisters I get some strange looks. I'm number seven of eight.
What's your favorite ‘80s song?
“Jump” by Van Halen. I have to crank it up every time. My 7-year-old loves that song!
If you had to trade places with one person for a day, who would it be and why?
Probably Tom Brady – the greatest quarterback of all time. My wife would agree with this answer.
